What’s the catch?

Some coins fall into the “collectibles” category, which would make them a prohibited transaction. To be considered a coin rather than a collectible, coins must be a county’s legal tender and they must be 99.5% pure.

Section 408(m)(3) states that the term collectible does not apply to the following:

U.S Treasury minted $5, $10, $25 and $50 gold coins
U.S Treasury minted silver coins
U.S Treasury minted platinum coins
Coins minted under the laws of any state

Also, the term collectible does not apply to any gold, silver, platinum or palladium bullion that meets the fineness required by the Commodities Futures Act. Bullion bars or rounds must have meet the following fineness minimums:

Gold .995+
Silver .999+
Platinum .9995+
Palladium .9995+

In addition, you must remember, when investing in precious metals with your IRA or other retirement investment vehicle, your custodian, such as The Kingdom Trust Company, must be in possession of the metals.

Next you will find a precious metals vendor, determine the quantity and type of metal you wish to purchase and direct your retirement account custodian to send the vendor the funds necessary to complete the purchase. The vendor will then deliver the metal to the custodian or the custodian’s storage facility.
