Self-Directed Retirement Accounts

Are you disappointed with the returns of your Individual Retirement Account (IRA)? Are you looking for a safer IRA investment than the volatile stock market for your retirement funds? Is there a specific investment, business, or industry that you know and understand? Do you have an IRA, 401(k) or other retirement fund you’d like to take direct control of?

If so, a self-directed IRA from The Kingdom Trust Company is for you. Kingdom Trust gives investors the opportunity to direct their retirement plan assets into a wide range of investments. With a self-directed IRA, you can hold traditional investments such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, but you can also hold a host of different alternative investments. Imagine being able to enjoy the freedom and flexibility of investing in a variety of assets while enabling a great level of diversification with your retirement portfolio. Imagine having real control over your assets and on a tax-advantaged basis via a self-directed IRA.

What are alternative investments?

Most anything really. The IRS Code governing what types of investments can be held within a non-taxable IRA account does not specify what can be held within the account but rather what cannot be held. Section 4970 of the IRS Code explains that IRA holders are not allowed to invest in life insurance, collectibles, or stock in an S corporation. This means that your investment possibilities are endless.

Some of the more common investments held in self-directed accounts are

  • Real estate (commercial and residential property, tax liens, rental property, etc.)
  • Precious metals (such as gold and silver bullion, American Eagle coins and platinum bars)
  • Private companies (including LLCs, limited partnerships and C Corporations)
  • Private lending (such as notes secured by deeds of trust, unsecured notes and mortgages)
  • IRA LLCs built specifically for “checkbook control”
  • Private REITS and funds
  • Crowdfunding
Some less common investments held in MyRA accounts include
  • Timber rights
  • Cattle
  • Equipment leases
  • Virtually anything else!

Are the possibilities truly endless?

The above is by no means a comprehensive list. If you have questions about a potential investment, simply give us a call at 888-753-6972 to discuss. While we are unable to give investment advice, we can let you know if an investment is feasible.

Why haven’t I heard about this before?

Most bankers, brokers, and financial planners have been trained in the traditional investment world of stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Simply put, they don’t know how flexible IRA investments can be. In addition, most traditional investment companies don’t allow alternative assets in their clients’ IRA accounts.

Do I qualify for a MyRA IRA?

Yes. All you have to do is open a self-directed retirement account with The Kingdom Trust Company. If you have a 401(k), IRA or defined benefit plan, then you can do a retirement rollover. If you don’t have an IRA or other retirement plan currently,  you can open one with Kingdom Trust today.

Can I still invest in traditional investments?

Certainly. That’s the beauty of a self-directed IRA! While we specialize in alternative investments, you can still invest in traditional investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and certificates of deposit with Kingdom Trust.
